Anacostia River Grant

Dr. Caroline Solomon, professor of biology of the Department of Science, Technology, and Mathematics, has received a grant award from the University of the District of Columbia’s College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences. The project is called Continuous Monitoring of Harmful Algal Productivity and Physiology in the Anacostia River.

Over the next year, Solomon’s award in the amount of $13,466 will allow undergraduate students (both non-majors and science majors) to be involved in sampling, analysis, and interpretation of data from nine sites determined by the Anacostia Watershed Society for nutrient concentrations, bacteria and phytoplankton composition, nitrogen uptake and assimilation enzyme rates, and toxin production to better understand the impact of organic nitrogen in the Anacostia River.
