Overview of TIP CRLA Training Program

The Tutorial & Instructional Programs (TIP) training program has been certified by the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA). The CRLA sets the international standards for tutor training programs. You can work toward three levels of certification: Level 1/Regular, Level 2/Advanced, and Level 3/Master. Rhonda Madden is responsible for Level 1 training, Level 2 training and Level 3 training.

  • Caches and Tutors are required to complete Level 1/Regular training.
  •  Coaches and Tutors must complete six Level 1 training sessions.
  • Levels 2/Advanced and 3/Master are optional unless otherwise specified by your Supervisor. (Some positions within TIP require Levels 2 and 3 certification.)

There are several modes of training:

  • lectures;
  • one-on-one or small group activities;
  • workshops;
  • videotapes;
  • on-line reading;
  • on-line quizzes; and
  • meetings with your Supervisor.

The on-line reading material is located on our website and at my.gallaudet.edu. However, the on-line quizzes are only located at my.gallaudet.edu.

To be certified for Level 1, you must do the following:

  • complete 15 hours of Level 1 training;
  • provide 25 hours of tutoring or writing advising; and
  • receive satisfactory evaluations from your students and Supervisor(s).

To be certified for Level 2, you must do the following:

  • complete 15 hours of Level 2 training;
  • provide 25 hours of tutoring and/or writing advice (total 50 hours including Level 1 training); and
  • receive satisfactory evaluations from your students and Supervisor(s).

To be certified for Level 3, you must do the following:

  • complete 15 hours of Level 3 training;
  • provide 25 hours of tutoring and/or writing advising (total 75 hours including Level 1 & Level 2); and
  • receive satisfactory evaluations from your students and your Supervisor(s)

You can begin reading the manual and doing the quizzes by doing the following:

  • go to my.gallaudet.edu;
  • logon using your GDOC account (your user name plus password);
  • click on TIP Training under "My Organizations."

Coaches and tutors can be certified for up to three levels in one semester providing they meet all requirements, have accumulated 75 hours tutoring students, and received positive evaluations from their students and Supervisor.
