Do you like to analyze, compare, and interpret facts and figures? If so, you may want to consider a major in Accounting. You'll learn how to keep financial records of business transactions and how to prepare statements concerning assets, liabilities, and operating results. The major also involves economics, the interpretation of financial data, and management skills. It's a rapidly growing profession, and that's not likely to change because corporations, governments, charities, labor unions, and individuals need accountants.

The Department of Business is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. The accounting program gives you a broad base of study and is designed to prepare you for entry-level positions in government or private industry. Many accountants specialize in auditing, taxes, or consulting. There are also several professional designations within the field of Accounting which include CPA (Certified Public Accountant) as well as a CMA (Certified Management Accountant) and a CIA (Certified Internal Auditor). However, to earn these distinctions, you will have to pass extremely challenging exams after graduation. If you are interested in becoming a certified public accountant (CPA), you will work closely with faculty advisors to plan courses that meet the CPA requirements and prepare for the CPA examination.

As a major in this Department, you will be given the opportunity to help manage a hands-on investment through the University's Student Managed Stock Fund. Starting with $50,000 from the University's endowment, you can select your own stocks based on sound financial principles and then help manage this investment portfolio for the University. Gallaudet is one of a few universities in the nation that gives you this kind of real-life investing experience.
