If you like working with young people and have a passion for learning and teaching, then education is the major for you. Being organized, communicating well, and possessing the power to motivate people are also traits of a good teacher. A major in education will mean choosing a specialization of early childhood, elementary, secondary or physical education. For secondary education, many states now require teachers to have a background in both general education and in a content area.

As a major in the Education department, you must take course work in psychology, human development, teaching methods, curriculum development, and a supervised student teaching experience. The number of credits required for graduation and certification vary according to specialization. Our undergraduate degree meets the requirements for certification in general education. A bachelor's degree in education program emphasizes reflective teaching and learning that requires you to be an active part of the learning process and includes class work and field experiences with children. Successful completion of the program will provide you with state certification recognized in Washington, D.C. and in a number of other states. In addition, the program is accredited by the National Council on the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

You may also participate in our special five-year combined bachelor's/master's program which combines your final year of undergraduate work with an additional one-year to obtain your master's degree in deaf education.
