There are two types of mathematics - theoretical mathematics and applied mathematics. Theoretical mathematics focuses on creating new mathematical theories or finding new ways to relate mathematical principles. Applied mathematics can be used to solve problems in business, industry, government, engineering, and the natural and social sciences. If you've always been interested in the science of numbers and statistics, then this is the major for you.
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department offers both a bachelor's of arts degree as well as a bachelor's of science degree in mathematics. The B.S. degree has more intensive science-based set of foundation courses required in conjunction to its major courses. It will also prepare you for graduate school. Both degrees will prepare you for a career in mathematics.
Math skills are valued in a wide range of occupations, including business, physics, teaching, accounting, drafting and design, finance, operations research, engineering and even healthcare. Any research field, in particular, needs the assistance of qualified statisticians.
