If you study English, you will explore the worlds of literature and culture. It will provide you with access to ideas, cultures, social mores, and political concepts of any given time or setting. A major in English will also teach you to write, to think critically and creatively, to weigh values, and to communicate ideas. You will learn to discern what is important and synthesize that information for the use of others.
The English Department offers a major in English with flexibility that allows you to focus in areas such as writing, teaching, or literature. Coursework focuses on areas such as literary study, the historical periods of medieval, renaissance, and eighteenth through twentieth centuries, and other English literature topics. This provides a basis for secondary school teaching, journalism, or graduate school in the humanities, social sciences, law, business, and public administration.
If you are interested in advanced English work, you may wish to consider Honors in English. You will devote extensive time and effort to a research project or a creative writing project.
The Department also offers minors in English, journalism, or writing.
