Recreation and Sports Programming

In today's society people have more opportunities to play, relax, or pursue a hobby or sport. As a result, a profession in recreation and leisure has emerged. If you are interested in organizing leisure activities, including arts and crafts, fitness, sports, and special events for people of all ages, this might be a major for you. As a recreation professional professional, you might work in state and municipal parks, YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, resorts, health clubs, the military, corporations, and in the private sector.

The Recreation and Sports Programming major, with its five different areas of emphasis, will prepare you for leading recreation programs for people of all ages and abilities in different environments. In the major, you will learn how to plan, design, and evaluate recreation and sport programs and operate facilities. You will take courses in leadership, management, and risk analysis. In addition, you will learn how recreation is used as a therapeutic technique and how to adapt activities to accommodate people with disabilities. The Department also offers minors in athletic coaching, dance, and recreation.
