Theatre Arts

Theatre is a major form of human expression, taking place in the present, but connecting us to other times and places. Through characterization, design, and technology, theatre artists provide a window into the human condition. The study of theatre embraces a broad range of skills including acting, directing, interpretation, design, and construction. Theatre is a dynamic art form, constantly changing to include current issues and new media.

The Theatre Arts Department offers two distinct specializations for the theatre arts major – educational drama and production/performance. The uniqueness of the theatre arts major at Gallaudet is the fact that theatre is expressed through English and American Sign Language, and you will learn how theatre can be adapted to fit the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing population.

If you're interested in how children can learn about themselves through drama, then this is the specialization for you. This specialization combines three different studies together - theatre arts, education, and psychology – to show how role play, drama techniques, and improvisation can be integrated into educational, recreational, and social settings. You will learn how to lead children in applying story building, character development, and improvisation to their own personal, social, intellectual, and physical growth.

If you're interested in acting, design, and technical theatre, then this is the specialization for you. You'll learn about the historical and theoretical perspectives of theatre. You’ll have the opportunity to design major productions as well as children's theatre.
