Are you interested in learning other languages and cultures and in networking with other Deaf communities? The Department of Foreign Languages at Gallaudet University offers Gallaudet students a unique opportunity to learn German Sign Language in Hamburg, an exciting city in Northern Germany.

Study Abroad Program duration and timeline:

This is a four-week program that typically runs between May and June.

Study Abroad Program components:

  1. Daily German Sign Language instruction from a qualified Deaf German Sign Language teacher

  2. Cultural and artistic tours lead by a member of the German Deaf community, including bike and boat tours to explore Hamburg, and tours to other German cities, such as Berlin.

  3. Social interactions with the local Deaf community and visits to deaf schools to learn about deaf education in Germany.

  1. In the fall semester previous to the program, you need to fill out an application.

  2. In the spring semester previous to your departure, you need to sign up for an orientation course, "German Studies," with the rest of your fellow travelers.

  3. Some previous knowledge of written German is recommended.

You will get a total of five Gallaudet credits. This includes the four-week intensive study abroad program and the one-hour-a-week orientation course in the spring.
