Press Release (April 29, 2008)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congratulations to Indiana School for the Deaf of Indianapolis for winning the 12th annual Gallaudet University National Academic Bowl. The team, including members Ann and Colin Whited, Gabriel Paulone, Janna DiBiase, and coaches Mary Kovatch and Chuck Daube, came back from an early deficit against 2nd place winner Maryland School for the Deaf, to earn its first Academic Bowl victory since 2003. In the 3rd place match, Edmonds-Woodway High School of Edmonds, Washington, beat White Station High School of Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. Robert Davila, president of Gallaudet University, addressed all of the teams at the conclusion of the championship match. "Throughout the past three days of the Academic Bowl, I was very impressed with the spirit of cooperation and teamwork by all of the team members and their coaches," he said. "I congratulate all of you."

In addition to the awards given out to the place winners, two additional awards were presented. The Outstanding Player award was presented to Allison Weiner, a senior and team member from Maryland School for the Deaf. The Sportsmanship team award was presented to W.T. Woodson High School of Fairfax, Virginia.

About the Gallaudet University Academic Bowl

Gallaudet University established the Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Students in 1997, with the goal of promoting academic competition among school teams. Quiz tournaments, in which teams of high school students compete against each other in local, regional, and national events, have gained wide popularity among high schools and colleges throughout the country.

At each regional Academic Bowl, teams compete against each other in answering questions on a wide variety of subjects. The first and second place winners from each of the five regions compete in the National Academic Bowl at Gallaudet University in late April.

Beginning with the 2007-2008 competition year, the Academic Bowl program is administered through the Gallaudet University College of Professional Studies and Outreach (CPSO). To learn more about CPSO, please visit CPSO online at cpso.gallaudet.edu.
