In March 1988, Gallaudet University experienced a watershed event that led to the appointment of the university’s first deaf president. Since then, Deaf President Now (DPN) has become synonymous with self-determination and empowerment for deaf and hard of hearing people everywhere.

A letter from the DPN 25 Co-chairs:

The 25th anniversary of the Deaf President Now (DPN) movement will occur in March 2013. This civil rights movement culminated with the appointment of a deaf president for the first time in 124 years of Gallaudet’s history.

To recognize the significance of this milestone for the deaf community, the university is planning a semester-long lecture series to understand fundamental questions about the impact of DPN on the lives of deaf people in the United States and the world.

We ask about key transformative changes and what work remains. We hope you will find these stimulating as we have much to learn from our history.

Sincerely,

Brian H. Greenwald, Ph.D., Professor of History

Fred S. Weiner, Interim Assistant Vice President for Administration
