Live Near Your Work (LNYW) is a home ownership assistance program encouraging employees to live close to their jobs, which will be made available in the spring of 2012 to full-time employees of Gallaudet University and the Clerc Center.  University officers, members of the President’s Cabinet and employees listed on the University’s IRS Form 990 are disqualified from participating.

LNYW is a performance-contingent grant program created by the DC Office of Planning that will match contributions by Gallaudet University.  The grants will go towards down-payments and closing costs for homes purchased by awarded employees.  Gallaudet and the DC Office of Planning have agreed to jointly fund the program to provide grants for ten employees.  Each grant will amount to $12,000 per participating employee. 

The grants will be performance-contingent--awarded employees will begin to reduce payback obligations by living in their purchased homes for more than three years; all payback obligations will be fully waived after five years.  The grant can only be applied towards the down payment and closing costs for the purchase of homes that will serve as primary residences and are within 1.5 miles of Gallaudet.  The program will be limited to ten qualified applicants who will be identified on a first come basis.

Qualified applicants must be:
  • Full-time University or Clerc Center employee
  • Not listed on Gallaudet's 990 Form or member of the President's Cabinet
  • Moving to a primary residence within 1.5 miles of campus borders.
  • If you are currently a homeowner within 1.5 miles of Gallaudet, new home must be closer to Gallaudet than current residence.

Application Process--To apply for the program, employees must:

  1. Be prescreened/registered by the Office of Program Development
    *You will be notified whether you can qualify for the program via email before classes begin.
  2. Complete eight hours of home ownership and credit counseling coursework provided by Gallaudet University (interpreting and translation services provided). Classes will be held in SLCC, Room 2300B.
  3. Complete a one-on-one credit review and preparedness session provided by the Greater Washington Urban League (sessions will be held on campus, interpreting and translation services provided)
  4. Receive a pre-qualification letter from a mortgage lender
  5. Complete an application survey form to be made available in the spring of 2012
  Submitting Application Paperwork:
  • Application packets will be accepted from April 17-19, 2012, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    *Please email by April 16, if you cannot submit your paperwork during this time frame.
  • Application packets must be delivered in person to Kati Morton, Program Development, in College Hall, Room 300.
  • Application packets will not be accepted unless completed
    • Prequalification letter from mortgage letter
    • Education Certification from Greater Washington Urban League (for classes and 1-on-1 counseling)
    • Completed Survey Form from DC Office of Planning
  • Grants awarded by lottery. The lottery will be held during the week of April 23. Qualified applicants will be invited to attend the drawing. Winners do not have to be present to win.
  • Performance contingent—5 yrs primary residency, all obligations are waived
