Historical Sketch

The National Health-Care Foundation for the Deaf, a non-profit organization, was established in Washington, D.C. on March 1972 in cooperation with the Saint Elizabeths Hospital. This was established to provide the independent living skills and housing programs for deaf individuals with social and emotional problems.
The National Health-Care Foundation for the Deaf bought a new house on Otis Street, hence the name Otis Housing, to assist members with mental health and behavior problems in developing their independent living skills. This house is located at 1203 Otis Street in Northeast part of Washington, D.C. This housing program includes training in independent living skills, social relationship skills, and leisure/recreational skills. In additional, a few group homes such as Community Housing for the Hearing Impaired were added to the program.

Scope and Content
This collection consists of by-laws, correspondences, letters, lists of board of directors, minutes and miscellaneous of the National Health-Care Foundation for the Deaf organization. A large portion of this collection consists of the minutes of meeting of the board of directors. This organization works with the Saint Elizabeth's Hospital.
