ASL Courses

Course Expectation and Commitment
Students are expected to attend every class, and need to use ASL in and out of the classroom to increase comprehension and production skills. In addition, students are required to attend Deaf events either on the campus or within the community. ASL courses are not self-paced but comprehensive and intensive courses. The assignments will be conducted through videotaping and video editing to receive an optimal quality of constructive feedback. The summer ASL courses are two weeks long. Due to the intensive nature of the summer ASL courses, you may take no more than two levels of ASL I-VI during the four successive ASL summer sessions. This policy does not include registering for Visual Gestural Communication, Fingerspelling or Classifiers courses. ASL courses are not available for audit.

ASL Placement Screening

ASL classes at Gallaudet University may not be equivalent to classes you have taken at other locations. To ensure that you are placed in the class that best meets your needs, review the course descriptions and select the one that seems to fit your current skill level. For more information, see ASL Placement Screening.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED-equivalent to take any PST prefixed courses. Senior high school students are eligible to enroll only with written recommendation of their high school academic advisor and permission of the instructor.

Students are required to earn a grade of B or better in their class in order to advance to the next level of ASL at Gallaudet University. ASL courses are not available for audit. For further information about grade reports and transcripts, go to Registration Information and Academic Information.
