Briana Johnson and Aarron Loggins make Gallaudet proud with roles as Miss and Mr. Black Deaf America

Undergraduate Briana Johnson and alumnus Aarron Loggins have made Gallaudet proud by becoming Miss and Mr. Black Deaf America. Judges awarded the titles during the 2009 National Black Deaf Advocates Conference held this summer in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Johnson, born and raised in Atlanta, Ga., is a sophomore studying government and considering law school as her next move. She is also a member of the Gallaudet Dance Company. “I felt blessed, triumphant, and victorious,” said Johnson of the moment when she was declared the winner of the title. “I believe the judges felt I would be a good role model to other young females, regardless of race, because of my determination to never quit,” Johnson said.

Loggins grew up in Joliet, Ill. During his undergraduate years at the University, Loggins held leadership roles in the Black Deaf Student Union and the Student Body Government, was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and performed in several Theatre Arts productions. He founded the step team squad Da JumpBack and danced with the Gallaudet Dance Company. Now working with the Universal Leadership program within the marketing organization Premier Financial, Loggins sees leadership as a challenge, but one he is ready to accept. “It is not an easy thing,” he said of becoming a leader, “but it is where my life journey is leading me.”

Both Johnson and Loggins have been making appearances as part of their new roles. Johnson began immediately, being present at various activities during the NBDA Conference. Loggins’ most recent appearances include hosting a reception for IMPACT, a civic organization for black professionals, and a red carpet NAACP event at the Lincoln Theater.
