Career Center Internship Program and Stipend Policies

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM POLICIES

Minimum requirements for credit and non-credit internships through the Career Center:

Student Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be a degree-seeking student enrolled at Gallaudet University
  • You must have successfully completed your first semester at Gallaudet University (exceptions for transfer students)
  • You must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0
  • If you do not meet these requirements, please see your Career Consultant

Student Performance Requirements:

  • Your learning agreement form must be approved before internship start date
  • For international internships, you must follow requirements of the Center for International Programs and Services (CIPS) and you must provide a letter of recommendation from your academic department
  • You must keep a log and send weekly updates to your Career Consultant during the internship
  • You must complete the internship - performing work tasks in a professional manner and achieving your goals You must complete a self-evaluation form at the end of the internship

Internship Site Requirements:

  • Internships must be at least 10 hours a week for 10 weeks
  • Internship experience must be related to your career interests
  • Employer must provide professional work setting (not home office)
  • Employer must provide adequate supervision on site
  • Employer must complete Supervisor Evaluation form at middle and end of your internship

INTERNSHIP STIPEND POLICIES

To apply for an internship stipend, you must fulfill all of the requirements stated above AND the following:

  • You must apply for the stipend BEFORE your internship starts
  • Applications are accepted for the CURRENT ACADEMIC YEAR ONLY
  • For domestic internships (in the U.S.), you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above
  • For international internships (outside the U.S.), you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above; you can receive only ONE stipend in your entire Gallaudet career, except in unusual situations as determined by the Career Center director
  • You must sign and return form showing you received stipend and will repay stipend if you do not complete the internship
  • You must write a thank you letter to the donor of the stipend funds
  • Your internship must take place off-campus, except in unusual situations as determined by the Career Center director
  • Your internship must involve career-related work activities -- stipends are not intended for study abroad, part-time jobs, independent study, research, thesis or capstone projects (unless these occur within an internship)
  • Stipend funds cannot be used for payment of tuition or fees at Gallaudet University or other colleges or universities
  • Stipend funds cannot be used for sign-language interpreting services
  • Your internship must be unpaid, except in unusual situations as determined by the Career Center director

Stipends are intended to assist you with living expenses (transportation, housing, meals) and are distributed "first come, first serve" based on demonstrated need and available funds. Funds are limited and priority will be given to students who fully complete their learning agreement and stipend forms.
