An Immersive Experience in ASL Depiction (2 credits)

Course Description

This two-credit online synchronous course is designed for signers within the deaf/hard of hearing community working in settings that often require expression in advanced ASL discourse. This course is also open to American Sign Language users who wish to improve their technical abilities and skills. This course will explore and teach the three vital components of an effective ASL message: advanced non-manual signals, classifiers, and facial grammar. Students will get real-time practice with technical texts, and learn to create more effective and engaging translations, using videoconferencing technology and GoReact. This course is available for 3 RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) CEUs per credit.

Classes will take place Mondays through Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm EST. Saturday, 3/25/2023 will be from 9am to 12pm EDT.

ASL and English: Comparative Analysis (3 credits)

Course Description

This course covers areas of vocabulary, semantics, grammar and organization of ASL and English. Students look at the linguistic aspects of both languages and compare the two. The class also covers word classes and sentence structure of both languages. To assist students in understanding the structure of both languages, discussion of how languages work is included.

Course Description

Upon completing the course and the exam, students will receive their caregiver certificate from the American Caregiver Association (ACA). The National Caregiver Certification Course (NCCC) from Gallaudet University, in collaboration with the American Caregiver Association (ACA), is intended to provide relevant and useful information about the most common responsibilities and duties of caregiving. This course provides insights into how community health workers increase wellness and improve access to health services through outreach activities to target populations. Course Description

This is a survey of the various areas of study of deaf culture in the United States (history, folklore, anthropology and sociology).  The course begins with a macro-view at the term "culture" as it is seen through American eyes.  The definition will then be applied to the Deaf experience.  The course will end with an exploration of diversity within the global Deaf community.

Disability Studies (3 credits)

Course Description

This course will introduce students to the field of Disability Studies. As an emerging interdisciplinary field of study, Disability Studies does not approach disability as a "medical condition, but as a human condition" (Charlton). Instead of studying the causes and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities, we will explore the historical, social, political, religious, philosophical, and cultural influences that "construct" the category of "disability." We will also examine how persons with disabilities construct their own meanings and identities.

Linguistic Human Rights and Deaf Communities (3 credits)

Course Description

This course provides students with a survey of the concept of linguistic human rights. First included as an international right in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, linguistic human rights has become an important concept for identifying and furthering the rights of peoples based on languages. Students will examine the historical and theoretical underpinnings to this concept as it emerged within human rights discourse and tools which have been developed from this concept to further human rights aspirations based on language. The course will look at how this concept has been and continues to be used with deaf communities.

Course Description

The dynamics of oral cultures and their traditions will be introduced in this course by studying the development of oral literature and literary artists in other cultures. Then using this as background, attempts will be made to study ASL literary tradition by looking at life histories, narratives, and poetry performances.

Early Language Acquisition and Cognitive Development of Bilingualism (3 credits)

Course Description

This course describes the early development of ASL and English in young deaf and hard of hearing children and their impact on cognitive development.  The course examines how deaf and hard of hearing children go through developmental stages of acquiring and learning American Sign Language, which is similar to how hearing children go through developmental stages of acquiring a spoken language and how this development is tied to cognitive functions that are the precursors for further linguistic and academic growth (sign babbling, sign jargon, first words, ASL grammatical development and vocabulary expansion).  In addition, the course will address factors intrinsic to the bilingual child as well as to the environment that promote and/or prevent their linguistic and cognitive development.

Course Description

This course will address individualized planning for language and emergent literacy development that can be used as a guide for teaching and learning interventions to support a child's linguistic competence in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.  Candidates will apply various American Sign Language (ASL) and English assessment tools to explore ways of assessing diverse deaf and hard-of-hearing candidates' language and literacy acquisition and learning at home and at school.  Based on the results of these assessments, the Candidates will reflect on and identify the bilingual methodology approaches to meet the ASL and English language and literacy needs of candidates.  They will apply these strategies to home plan, lesson and unit planning, and within their settings..

Differentiating Instruction in the Content Areas (3 credits)

Course Description

This course reviews what it means to be an effective teacher and introduces the concepts of universal design for learning (UDL) as well as differentiation to meet the needs of deaf students who have disabilities.  Further studied is the concept of multiple literacies and access to content and opportunity for the development of literate and metacognitive thought.  The lesson plan format is augmented with the development of tiered lessons by addressing three levels of content, process and/or product expectations as determined by interest level, learning style, or readiness.  In addition, candidates will become familiar with a variety of instructional strategies for evidence-based practice in general and special education, the hierarchy of cognitive applications in Bloom's Taxonomy, Barbara Given's 5 natural learning systems, Robert Sternberg's Triarchic Intelligence model, as well as Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences.  Candidates are taught to encourage a) self regulation and other self-determination skills in their students, b) social interaction and true discussion as a method for developing metacognition and c) developing receptive and expressive learning pathways for academic discourse.

Strategies for Dev Comm, Lang and Cogn for D/HH Infants/Toddlers (3 credits)

Course Description

This online course is the fourth course in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infants, Toddlers and Families: Collaboration and Leadership Interdisciplinary  Certificate Program.  The course addresses the methods, strategies and techniques for developing language, communication, cognition and literacy for infants and toddlers who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.  Candidates will acquire knowledge of assessments used to describe the strengths and needs of these children.  The course emphasizes an interdisciplinary collaborative approach and the roles of related professionals (e.g., audiologists, early childhood educators, speech-language pathologists, social workers, psychologists, etc).  Strategies and resources will address the continuum of communication and language opportunities including the development of spoken English and American Sign Language.

Interpreting

CASLI Generalist Knowledge - Ethics and Cultural Responsiveness Exam Preparation

Course Description

This class prepares both CDI and NIC candidates for the NEW Ethics and Cultural Responsiveness Exam for CASLI. This is one portion of the CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exam. If candidates have already passed the previous CASLI written test, this is offered as a "gap" test that must be passed in order to be eligible to take the CASLI Generalist Performance Exam for certification.


If candidates have not already passed the written test, then the Ethics and Cultural Responsiveness Exam AND the Fundamentals of Interpreting Exam will be taken in tandem. (PST 170 is recommended as preparation for the Fundamentals of Interpreting Exam.) 


Students should already have familiarity with: RID's Code of Professional Conduct, interpreting best practices, discussing ethical scenarios, and Demand Control-Schema. Students will be introduced to the domains measured by this ethics test, have exposure to the exam structure, practice with multiple decision-points scenarios, and receive feedback from both the instructor and peers.  


This asynchronous course has no required meeting times, but does have a weekly submission schedule, and students can request virtual office hours as needed. This course has pass/fail grading. CASLI Generalist Knowledge - Fundamentals of Interpreting Exam Preparation

Course Description

This course will prepare potential CDI and NIC test candidates to pass the Fundamentals of Interpreting Exam for CASLI. This is only one component of the CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exam, and PST 169 is recommended as preparation for the other portion, the Ethics and Cultural Responsiveness Exam.


The course will cover the ten content domains under this exam and techniques for handling the type of multiple choice test questions utilized in both ASL and English. Students will take several practice tests to gauge their readiness for the actual examination. Students are expected to have familiarity with interpreting best practices, Demand Control-Schema, history of the interpreting field, models of interpreting, and considerations pre-acceptance, pre-assignment, during assignment and post assignment including billing and logistics. (This list is not exhaustive.)

This course will prepare CASLI test candidates to take the Generalist Performance Exam for Hearing Interpreters which would result in RID’s National Interpreter Certification (NIC) credentials. Students will review the Job Task Analysis for hearing interpreters, and look for examples of these skills and abilities in their own work. Students will record themselves interpreting practice performance scenarios and reflect on and analyze their work. Diversity will be represented among Deaf and hearing consumers in terms of language use, age, gender, and cultural background. Students will also take a mock exam and reflect on the experience. Students need to be eligible to take the Generalist Performance Exam, which would mean that either they have already passed the Fundamentals on Interpreting written test and are eligible to take the Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Case Studies (“gap” test) at the same time with their performance exam, or they have already passed both portions of the Generalist Knowledge Exam. (PST 169 and PST 170 are recommended for more training on both portions of the Knowledge exam.)


Students should already have a comprehensive knowledge of both ASL and English, and experience in both interpreting and transliterating, both to and from each language. Practice videos will vary from 5 to 20 minutes in order to help practice stamina in interpretation, and to be in line with current source materials from CASLI. 


This asynchronous course has no required meeting times, but does have a weekly submission schedule, and students can request virtual office hours as needed. This course has pass/fail grading. Linguistics

Learning Language by Eye or by Ear (1 credits)

Course Description

This one-credit course is designed to introduce the layperson to the basics of first language acquisition, focusing on sign language acquisition as the point of departure. The first few lectures of the course will provide a crash-course in linguistics for beginners, as well as provide background for the importance of studying child language development, particularly in the context of deafness and sign language. The remainder of the course is organized chronologically, from birth to 36 months, highlighting the major developmental milestones for each age and expanding to discuss current research on selected topics of interest for each age period.

Sexuality and Gender Studies

Introduction to Sexuality & Gender Studies (3 credits)

Course Description

This 3 credit course will provide an introduction into Sexuality and Gender Studies. This course will use texts, articles, speakers, literature, and film to bring students to a deeper understanding of LGBTQ+ cultures and communities. This course will educate students on the central concepts of sexual orientation and gender identity within historical, political, and societal frameworks. Throughout this course, students will work towards an understanding of the intersectional dynamics of privilege and oppression as they relate to LGBTQ+ individuals and culture by exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals and their partners/families.  Special attention will be given to each Unit on LGBTQ+ issues within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Communities.

Theoretical Perspectives on Sexuality and Gender (3 credits)

Course Description

In this interdisciplinary course, students will be introduced to key theories and theoretical frameworks for Sexuality and Gender Theory including queer theory and feminist theory. These theories are themselves already quite interdisciplinary, so students will spend time learning how these theories can work across different disciplines and can be used for both practical and academic purposes. Students will learn how to apply theoretical concepts to: the history of sexuality and gender, terminology that helps describe experiences and oppression including heterosexism, homophobia, and transphobia, queer activism, diverse experiences of sexuality and gender, and representations in literature, art, and popular media. We will also take an intersectional lens for our discussion and will discuss how sexual identities intersect with and shape other categories of identity, including gender, race, ethnicity, class, ability status, culture, and nationality.

Seminar III: Creative Work Project (1-3 credits)

Course Description

This is a 1-3 credit course, depending on the projected scope of the student project.  Creative Work Project is an inquiry, investigation, or creation produced by a student that makes an original contribution to the field of sexuality and gender studies and reaches beyond the traditional curriculum. This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop and practice advanced discipline-specific projects in collaboration with faculty members.  In the first week of the course, a specific list of responsibilities must be developed prior to approval. Credit is variable, and depends on the quantity and depth of work.
