The District of Columbia Zoning Commission voted unanimously during their public hearing on January 28 to approve Gallaudet University’s 2022 Campus Plan.
The Gallaudet 2022 Campus Plan is a ten-year update to the existing 2012 Facilities Master Plan that was approved by the District of Columbia Zoning Commission in 2003. The 2022 Campus Plan articulates the university’s vision for the campus and provides guidance for the physical development of campus facilities.
With the Zoning Commission approval, Phase I of the Campus Plan will commence. Phase I, which runs for several years, includes renovations of Ballard, Fay, and Dawes Houses, which are three historic campus buildings that are part of the Gallaudet College Historic District (which is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks and Historic Districts); the creation of a new pedestrian entrance to campus from the corner of Florida Avenue and 6th Street Northeast; the construction of a new residence hall for the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, a residential high school program located on campus; and various infrastructure improvements.
Planning principles of the 2022 Campus Plan include accommodating modest enrollment growth, which supports the Gallaudet Strategic Plan goals; increasing and enhancing on-campus housing; revitalizing the heart of the campus by increasing its density; integrating physical accessibility and sustainability; and building new connections with the local community.
In support of these planning principles, highlights of the 2022 campus plan also include the establishment of a new student learning commons to replace the library on the current site of the university’s visitor center and admissions office as well as the refurbishment of the “Gallaudet Mall” to enhance the space as an outdoor gathering area.
