Welcome our new graduate students to campus beginning Tuesday, August 20 through Friday, August 23.
To help new graduate students prepare for and understand the unique cultural and bilingual environment at Gallaudet, we are offering an orientation that is both online and face-to-face.
The online component is housed in the Blackboard organization 'Graduate Student Orientation', which is accessible to all new graduate students, and consists of captioned presentations, readings and discussion forums on culture and language. The Blackboard organization will remain active through the semester, so that students can go back and review the materials as needed.
The face-to-face component will take place on Tuesday August 20 through Friday August 23. Attached (related documents) is a complete schedule that lists the date, time and location for each activity.
On Tuesday August 20, students should first pick up their ID card from the Department of Public Safety. From there they should then go to Check-In in the JSAC Multipurpose Room to pick up an ID sticker, complete business registration (if needed), sign up for free lunch for the week, and wrap up other matters.
On Wednesday, GSO will kick off with a breakfast hosted by the President's Office at 8:30 a.m. at the Peikoff Alumni House ('Ole Jim'), a welcome from the Dean of the Graduate School, and a choice of break-out sessions on topics specific to the Graduate School. In the afternoon most of the departments will host orientations. Please check the schedule for time and location.
Finally, Thursday and Friday are packed with activities designed to provide new graduate students with opportunities to interact with fellow graduate students and faculty from other graduate programs at Gallaudet, with the ultimate goal of building connections across various linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
