Outcomes and Careers
Highlight of Student Learning Outcomes and Program Performance:
In 2000, the Department of Business at Gallaudet University was awarded accreditation for its BS in Business Administration and BS in Accounting programs by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). ACBSP offers accreditation to business programs that demonstrate excellence in teaching. Our accreditation was reaffirmed in 2010.
Below is information regarding the number of awards conferred in our ACBSP accredited programs.
Department of Business (DOB) is committed to student-centered learning and education excellence. We regularly assess our student learning outcomes (SLO) and program effectiveness using a systematic approach and multiple measures including a standardized test, such as Major Field Test (MFT) in business, alumni surveys, internship supervisor surveys, Gallaudet University Office of Institution Research (GUOIR) data in addition to student class performance. Below are charts highlighting student learning outcomes and achievements as well as program effectiveness.
- Accounting and Business Administration Program 6-Year Graduation Rate: (data source: GUOIR)
According to US Department of Education at https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?131450-Gallaudet-University, the medium 6-year graduation rate is 42% nationwide and 46% for Gallaudet University (GU). The 5-Year moving average is 73% and 76% for the Accounting and Business Administration Programs, respectively, and both are outperforming the national and the university average in this measure. However, the Accounting Program has experienced a sharp down-turn in its 6-Year graduation rate in the past two years. Such poor performance has propelled DOB to reflect on its practice and re-examine its curriculum and admission standard. Click on the file link: Standard 6 Table 6.1_2016-2018 for explanations and actions DOB is taking to address the issue.
- Retention Rate: (data source: GUOIR)
According to US Department of Education at https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?131450-Gallaudet-University, the median retention rate (students who return after their first year) is 69% nationwide and 67% for Gallaudet University (GU). The 5-Year moving average is 88% and 88% for the Accounting and Business Administration Programs, respectively, and again, both are outperforming the national and the university average in this measure.

Hence, data in 2011 came from the Alumni Survey of 2009 Graduates (December 2008 through August 2009); data in 2012 came from the Alumni Survey of 2010 Graduates (December 2009 through August 2010). The most recent Alumni Survey is 2016/2017 for recent graduates of 2014/2015. Alumni data provided where there were respondents to the survey.

Despite multiple SLO successes, there are rooms for improvement especially in the areas indicated in the charts below. The department has been actively seeking solutions including tutoring, labs, study table, and test prep class in our effort to help students retain knowledge acquired throughout their length of study in the Accounting and Business Administration Programs. Stay tuned for further updates in these areas as we make progress going forward! Click on the file link: Standard 4 Results 2016-2018 for the full report on Student Learning and Performance.
