Overview. The goal of the SL3D lab is to identify evidence-based practices for language and literacy intervention for D/HH children who are struggling to acquire language with a specific interest in language disorders that are expressed in the sign modality. One project investigates sign language assessments that may identify children who have unexplained language difficulties (SLI/DLD) or have language difficulties due to lack of exposure. The goal is to identify assessment strategies that have utility in authentic environments such as schools or clinics and can be done in a time-efficient manner. Another project investigates the outcomes of a statistical learning approach for language intervention presented in ASL. The lab also investigates the relationship between eye gaze and language and print literacy learning.
Facilities. The lab is equipped with measures to collect behavioral data for sign and spoken language acquisition, and academic achievement in reading, writing, and math. In addition, the lab has a wearable eye-tracking device that allows participants to move around and interact with the environment. Testing and intervention activities are conducted in rooms that are child friendly.
People. The lab is directed by Dr. James McCann, EdD, CCC-SLP. Collaborators include Dr. Karen Garrido-Nag, PhD, CCC-SLP and MS SLP students Leah Carson and Lauren Kelley.
