Our Interpretation and Translation programs prepare hearing, deaf, and hard of hearing students to work as interpreters in various settings including medical, educational, business, mental health, and legal interactions. Our programs provide an interdisciplinary approach to interpretation, accompanied by a state-of-the-art interpreting laboratory and extensive fieldwork. Graduates build a firm foundation of fluency in ASL and English, interpreting ethics and best practices, deaf culture, and communication skills.

Our Interpretation programs create and share research about sign language to advance the fields of interpreting and translation. In addition, students and faculty are engaged in several interrelated research and program initiatives related to research through DOI faculty research, BAI Student Research, MAI Student Research, and Ph.D. Student Research.
The Interpretation program welcomes visiting scholars, students, and guests for short- or long-term stays to enhance the program’s culture through their ideas and expertise.
Visitors can participate in activities, such as:
Students have completed internships at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other agencies and nonprofit organizations in the nation's capital. In addition, our undergrad program places interns throughout the United States and the world, connecting professors and students through videoconferencing.
