Campus Police Officers and dispatchers are on duty 24 hours each day, 365 days a year.
Officers patrol the campus on foot, on bicycles, segways, and in marked and unmarked vehicles.
There is a supervisor and/or assistant supervisor on duty during each shift.
Gallaudet's public safety officers and supervisors are trained at the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area Campus Public Safety Institute and are commissioned by the District of Columbia as "special police officers". They have the same powers as law enforcement officers to arrest without a warrant for offenses committed on the Gallaudet campus. They may also arrest outside of Gallaudet if they are in fresh pursuit for an offense committed on campus.
Dispatchers monitor sophisticated alarm and CCTV systems as well as respond to emergency and non-emergency requests for service from the community via telephone, videophone, and email as well as coordinate responses by outside agencies like DC Police Department and Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
Dispatchers receive certification as Emergency Medical Dispatchers with specialized training in response to police, fire, and medical emergencies through the Association of Public Safety Communicators International.
