The First Deaf Person to Be Named a MacArthur Fellow

Dr. Carol Padden, interim science director for the Science of Learning Center on Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2) and a trustee emeritus, has become the first deaf person to be named a MacArthur fellow. She is one of 23 recipients this year of the prestigious award from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Padden, a professor in the Department of Communications at the University of California, San Diego, was recognized for her lifelong work in sign language linguistics, including a recent study of Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language, which is used in a village in Israel’s Negev Desert.
