Manager, Communications and Community Engagement
Alex Leffers’ role is multifaceted, but interlinked in many ways. Alex is in charge of all communications efforts for DEDI, including social media, website, published articles, outreach efforts and the marketing of our services. The community engagement aspect includes outreach efforts, and working with internal and external communities - whether it’s an educational opportunity, or an opportunity to collaborate with one another - the goal is to develop strong relationships and foster EDI principles.
Formerly the Coordinator of LGBTQ+ Programs and EDI Marketing Specialist, he organized events and provided services to LGBTQA students, staff, and faculty.
Alex continues to provide education and awareness, and often consults on issues pertaining to LGBTQ+ students, staff and faculty. His work has also included numerous anti-racism programs on unpacking bias and racism, allyship, and building inclusive environments.
Alex brings more than 30 years of involvement in the Deaf LGBTQ+ community. He is a bisexual, transgender man. He has been involved with several Deaf LGBTQ+ organizations, including the defunct Capital Metropolitan Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf (CMRA), Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf (RAD), and International Deaf Leather.
Since working at Gallaudet, Alex has been an advocate for change. He has served on many committees, including the Diversity Strategy Team, the Transgender Task Force, and the Human Resources Transformation Team’s core working group. He’s also been involved with GSC for several years.
Alex’s favorite quote is “There is no thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives,” by Audre Lorde.
