TOEFL ITP level 1 tests are paper based and use 100 percent academic content to evaluate the English language proficiency of non-native English users. All questions are in multiple-choice format, with four answer choices per question. The test evaluates skills in three areas:

  • Subtest 1 - Listing Comprehension measures the ability to understand spoken English as it is used in colleges and universities. This subtest is waived for deaf and hard of hearing registrants.
  • Subtest 2 - Structure and Written Expression measures recognition of selected structural and grammatical points in standard written English.
  • Subtest 3 - Reading Comprehension measures the ability to read and understand academic reading material written in English.

The TOEFL will be about 4 hours long (including policy explanation, form completion, subtests, and breaks). Deaf and hard of hearing people get extended time as an accommodation.
