Paul was in his 15th year working in higher-education development when arriving at Gallaudet in 2014. His prior work was at the University of Washington in Seattle and Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. During his time at Clarkson as Associate Vice President, the university received an award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education as one of the nation's most improved fundraising programs.

Beginning his development career at United Way in Seattle, Paul managed a program of leadership giving there that was recognized as the nation's top performer. Earlier he worked at Boeing for ten years, and began his career in Washington, DC on the staff of a U.S. Senator from South Dakota.
