Writing Mission Statements

Mission: A broad statement reflecting the direction and the values of the program/unit.

A strong mission statement has the following characteristics:

  • Clear and concise
  • Identifies purpose of program/unit
  • Identifies who is served and how
  • Appropriately aligned (supports mission of institution) course > program/unit > institution
