New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation (NSO) is a week-long transition program intended to help newcomers, including first-year and transfer students, prepare for the start of their journey at Gallaudet University.

During NSO you will have time to meet your academic and career advisors, become familiar with Gallaudet University resources, and get a head start on meeting your classmates.

JumpStart: ASL Program

If you are deaf or hard of hearing and want to learn American Sign Language, come to campus for JumpStart ASL, our free five-week summer immersion program for first-year students. You will learn beginner ASL skills and become comfortable on our bilingual campus.

English Language Institute

If your first written language is not English, you can prepare for college admission through the English Language Institute. International deaf and hard of hearing students can apply to Gallaudet through ELI, an intensive English program runs throughout the academic year and will prepare you for personal and professional success.

Academic and Career Advising

When you succeed, we all succeed. Our Academic Advising staff works with each student individually to help them develop an academic plan to stay on track to graduation.

The Career Center staff helps students set career goals, discover what majors and experiences will take them where they want to be, and find ideal internship and employment opportunities.

Student Employment

With more than 400 on-campus jobs plus countless opportunities in the tri-state area, your student employment journey will empower you to develop the appropriate skills and accumulate career resources necessary to identify, pursue, and achieve your career goals.

Peer Mentorship Program

Peer mentors provide one-on-one mentoring for all first-year students , connecting you to the campus community and helping you discover everything that Gallaudet and Washington, D.C. has to offer.

Faculty and Tutorial and Instructional Programs

With our faculty to student ratio of 8:1, our students already benefit from an individualized classroom experience. On top of that our faculty is here for you outside of the classroom– via VideoPhone, Facetime, Zoom, or Face-to Face during their office hours and tutoring sessions.

All tutoring services are free for Gallaudet students. We are committed to the success of each and every student’s academic journey.

Student Center Programs and Services (SCPS) offers a wide variety of student-centered, service-oriented co-curricular programs and activities designed to foster experiential learning and augment the academic experience.

Office of Diversity and Equity for Students

We offer programs and services that empower students of all backgrounds and walks of life to achieve academic, career and personal success. Gallaudet is committed to an inclusive campus environment, learn more about The Gallaudet Commitment.

Resident Life and Housing

Whether you are a new student, current student, returning or transfer student, or simply visiting this office covers all your on-campus living needs! The Residence Life office oversees the security and needs of all campus residents, provides quality programming, referrals to on and off-campus services, and runs paraprofessional programs for the RL team of resident advisors who maintain the peace in our 7 residence halls, Faculty Row houses, and Kendall Apartments.

Athletics & Intramural Sports

We have 7 men’s and 7 women’s varsity teams you can join; more than 200 student-athletes compete in varsity athletics. Also, we have over ten intramural sports and activities you can compete in!

Gallaudet Technology Service (GTS)

If you need to contact someone for any technology related needs or issues, or if you even need to borrow a laptop, iPad, or a Mifi hotspot, Gallaudet Technology Service (GTS) is here to help. GTS provides essential resources, end-user training, and support for academic and administrative uses of technology at Gallaudet University and the Clerc Center.

Hearing and Speech Center

Services include audiological testing, cochlear implant services, hearing aid evaluation, assistive devices, speech-language evaluation and therapy, and aural rehabilitation.

Office for Students with Disabilities (OSWD)

The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSWD) provides individually tailored, comprehensive support services to ensure equal access and opportunities for students with disabilities.

Gallaudet Interpreting Service (GIS)

Gallaudet Interpreting Service (GIS) provides American Sign Language–English interpretation in the classroom and at on-campus happenings. The best part is that interpreting requests are not the students’ responsibility, meaning our students can focus on their journey of becoming, not accessibility.

Real-time Captioning

GIS also provides real-time captioning to ensure no information is missed. Real-time captioning services are provided as needed in the classroom and at campus events through CART (Communication Access Real-Time).

Health and Wellness Program

The Health and Wellness Programs Office seeks to enhance the well-being of Gallaudet University students by empowering them to make informed health and lifestyle choices in accordance with their own values and belief systems. Looking for information on sexual health, bystander accountability, responsible partying, mental health, or more? You’ve come to the right place.

Counseling and Psychological Services' (CAPS)

The Counseling and Psychological Services’ (CAPS) supports the academic and social-emotional development of Gallaudet students by providing high-quality assessment, counseling, crisis intervention, and prevention programs. CAPS also provides consultation services for faculty and staff and contributes to the student paraprofessional training programs. CAPS also maintains a high-quality training program for graduate students that works to increase the number of qualified professionals serving the mental health needs of the Deaf community.

Public Safety

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is open all day, every day for any emergencies and routine matters. DPS aims to promote individual responsibility, community commitment, and dynamic crime prevention initiatives to create a safe, secure, and informed campus community.
