Inductees 2019

Seven former MSSD student-athletes, 3 coaches, and 4 teams will be enshrined into the MSSD Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 19, 2019, as part of MSSD's 50th anniversary and Homecoming. 

PETER DOWNEY - ATHLETE
FOOTBALL – 3 SEASONS
1977-1979
  • Heart and leader of the Eagles' defense--led the team in tackles, fumble recoveries, and interceptions
  • Led MSSD to an undefeated season, 9-0, allowing only 16 points all season with 7 straight shutouts
  • National Deaf Prep All-American 3 times
  • Several universities/colleges were interested in this outstanding defensive player
FOOTBALL TEAM 
1979
  • National Deaf Prep Championship and undefeated with a 9-0 record
  • Led nationally in scoring with 362 points; outscored all opponents, 362-16
  • Posted 7 straight shutouts, including back-to-back 50-point victories
  • Averaged 40.2 points per game
SWANHILDA AUSTIN - ATHLETE
VOLLEYBALL – 3 SEASONS
1989-1991
  • The Washington Post’s All-Met 1st Team and National Deaf Prep Player of the Year in 1991
  • Most Valuable Player and 1st Team in all 5 local tournaments in 1991, including conference
  • Guided MSSD to a 39-0 season, winning the championship in the DC/MD/VA metropolitan area's toughest conference

  • MSSD’s only undefeated team, with a 39-0 record
  • National Deaf Prep Championship while winning all 5 local and league tournaments
  • Undefeated in its league division B competition and all-out in both divisions A and B in the tournament play; the league in which MSSD competed was considered one of the best, if not the best, conferences in the DC/MD/VA metropolitan area
BRENDA REDMOND - ATHLETE
GIRLS BASKETBALL – 4 SEASONS
1980-1984
  • National Deaf Prep 1st Team All-American during junior and senior years
  • Leads MSSD history in career scoring; broke the school career record in scoring with 1,312 points in 1984
  • Led the team to 4 straight ESDAA championships
MIKE WEINSTOCK - COACH
GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH – 12 SEASONS
BOYS BASKETBALL COACH – 9 SEASONS
  • Honored as National Deaf Prep Coach of the Year in both girls and boys basketball
  • Led girls and boys basketball teams to 20+wins in a season 6 times
  • Guided the girls and boys basketball teams to 5 National Deaf Prep Championships and coached MSSD’s only girls team that won both the league season and the tournament championships
  • Total of 21 years coaching the girls and boys basketball programs
LINDA HARTZOG - ATHLETE
GIRLS BASKETBALL – 4 SEASONS
1984-1988
  • National Deaf Prep All-American
  • Scored 1,011 points in her high school career
  • Broke school records with a season average of 18.5 points; in one game, she scored 45 points
  • Led the team to the ESDAA finals twice, winning the championship in 1987
GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM 
1987-1988
  • National Deaf Prep Championship with a 26-3 record
  • Undefeated in the PVAC conference play with a perfect record of 12-0
  • Won championships in the PVAC conference tournament and at a local invitational tournament
  • Still holds the school record, with 24 straight victories in its 26-win season
GREG SIMMS - ATHLETE
BOYS BASKETBALL – 4 SEASONS
1983-1987
  • MSSD’s only basketball player who played on varsity teams all 4 seasons, missing only one game
  • Greatest MSSD rebounder in history with 1,278 rebounds, while scoring more than 1,600 points
  • Helped lead MSSD to 3 ESDAA championships (1984, 1985, and 1986)
  • Selected to National Deaf Prep teams in all 4 seasons he played at MSSD
TIMOTHY FRELICH - COACH
BOYS BASKETBALL – 22 SEASONS
  • MSSD’s longest-tenured coach (22 years), honored as a National Deaf Prep Coach of the Year
  • National Deaf Prep Team of the Year with nation’s best season record, 23-4, in 1987-1988
  • Guided the team to 3 straight ESDAA championships and Deaf Regional Tournament finals 7 times
  • Led MSSD to its first and only two-league championships in the history of the boys basketball program
BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM
1987-1988
  • National Deaf Prep Championship
  • Won MSSD’s 1st league championship 
  • High-octane offense averaging a remarkable 83.4 points per game; broke 18 school records
  • All 5 starters scored more than 10 points per game (between 10.0 and 23.7); 4 players on the team went on to play for Gallaudet University, 2 of whom broke several basketball records
JILL BIANCO - ATHLETE
SOFTBALL – 4 SEASONS
1995-1998
  • Guided MSSD to the National Deaf Prep Championships in 1996 and 1997
  • National Deaf Prep 1st Team All-American in 1996 and 1997
  • ISL championship in 1997 and 1998
  • Led the softball team to its 2 finest records in the history of MSSD (1996 and 1997)
VINCENT "TODD" SILVESTRI - ATHLETE
WRESTLING – 3 SEASONS
1979-1982
  • Considered one of the best wrestlers in the history of MSSD
  • Guided MSSD to 1st place in the ESDAA wrestling tournament 2 years in a row (1981 and 1982)
  • Selected as the ESDAA tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler in 1982
  • Placed 5th at the national tournament for 90+ private schools during the 1982-1983 season
THOMAS QUINN - COACH
WRESTLING COACH – 6 SEASONS
1977-1981 (4 YEARS)
2001-2003 (2 YEARS)
  • MSSD’s 1st wrestling coach (1977-1978)
  • Built MSSD's wrestling program into a winning culture
  • Led the team to its impressive 9-2 record in only the second year of the wrestling program
  • Guided the team to its first ESDAA championship in its fourth year of the wrestling program
