Gallaudet University is committed to providing an inclusive, safe, and supportive environment for community members to live, learn, and work. Title IX, which prohibits discrimination based on gender identity, encompasses harassment based on a student's identity as transgender, non-binary, or gender non-conforming.
Pursuant to DC and federal law, transgender students are permitted to use campus restrooms, lockers, and athletic facilities consistent with their gender identity. Students cannot be required to use facilities inconsistent with their gender identity, or to use individual-user facilities when other students are not required to do so. Gallaudet values the safety and well-being of our transgender students, staff, faculty members, alumni, and visitors, and is actively working to improve our campus climate.
In August 2016, single-use restrooms located throughout the University's campus received new signage, officially designating these facilities as gender-inclusive restrooms. These gender-inclusive restrooms facilitate a safer environment for all members of our community, regardless of gender identity or expression, and will be available for use by all members of the community, not just those who identify as transgender.
Along with private restrooms in the dormitories and existing unisex restrooms, the following single-stall gender-inclusive restrooms are located in the following areas:
The aforementioned actions follow the efforts of the University Transgender Task Force, which is assessing restrooms and locker rooms on campus and making recommendations for improvements. We thank the Gallaudet community, including transgender students, staff, and faculty members who provided input, for its support in these endeavors.
Special thanks to the Division of Administration & Finance for making this possible and to the following members and supporters of the Transgender Task Force Restrooms/Locker Rooms/Athletic Facilities Working Group: Britton Auman, Hansel Bauman, Liz Brading, Chris Hoffmann, Alex Leffers, Cara Miller, Judy Mounty, Liza Offreda, Fred Weiner, and Mike Weinstock.
If you find that one of the restrooms on the list or that any single stall restroom on campus is labelled incorrectly, please contact the Office of Campus Design and Planning.
