"The Gallaudet Museum will be the core of our shared history.
Gallaudet University is much more than brick and mortar. It's a place, a revered institution, with a heritage like no other.
Since 1864, generations of Gallaudet University alumni have played a significant role in Gallaudet's heritage. Their stories exist in their writings, their art, their photographs, their politics, their lives as students, and their achievements as alumni.
These stories need to be told. The Gallaudet Museum will be the core of our shared history. It is in our best interest to support that core for today's students and for the generations of deaf and hard-of-hearing youth that will follow.
I am honored to support this mission. I encourage you to join me.”
—Dr. Gerald "Bummy" Burstein, '50
He was honored for his generosity towards Gallaudet and his leadership roles in the Deaf community. On October 23, 2009, the Board of Trustees renamed the Gallaudet Leadership Institute (GLI) the Gerald "Bummy" Burstein Leadership Institute (BLI). President Davila said that Burstein "has given much of his life and career to serving deaf people." He taught for 15 years at the Minnesota School for the Deaf, Faribault, before moving to California School for the Deaf, Riverside, as a teacher and an administrator for 37 years. He was a history buff, and strongly believed that it was important to preserve the past, and has made a substantial gift to the Gallaudet University Museum Fund.
