One hundred fifty-eight years ago today, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, signed the charter authorizing the Columbia Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind to award collegiate degrees. The school was renamed the National College for the Deaf and Dumb. Today, it is the vibrant institution of higher education we know as Gallaudet University.
