President Cordano was one of the featured presenters at the annual SXSW EDU Conference and Festival held this week in Austin, Texas. Her presentation topic was “Why Everyone Should Learn Sign Language from Birth.” In this presentation, she said that “we are all wired to communicate with each other . . . Visual language and learning for all will reduce the lack of language exposure a monolingual society places on all of its children and millions of deaf and hard of hearing people. It will create a new model of belonging for our world.”
Over 50 people attended President Cordano’s presentation on Tuesday morning at the Austin Convention Center, including parents of deaf children, educators, school administrators, and members of the local Deaf community. It was very well received, and the President and other Gallaudet community members, including Board of Trustees vice chair Claire Bugen and Education faculty member Oscar Ocuto, ’02 & G-’03, answered questions for some time afterward.
President Cordano visited Texas School for the Deaf today, and will return there tomorrow for a luncheon gathering with the Austin chapter of the Gallaudet University Alumni Association. Alumnus Roy Lotz, ‘11, who runs Lotz of BBQ, a successful barbecue business, will cater this event.
