Dr. Ceil Lucas has been named a Fellow of th Linguistic Society of America, one of eight scholars to be so honored this year. Dr. Lucas taught linguistics at Gallaudet from 1982 to 2013, and was named Professor Emerita upon her retirement. She continues to edit Sign Language Studies, a peer-reviewed journal from Gallaudet University Press.

Dr. Lucas and the other seven newly-named Fellows will be formally inducted during the society’s annual meeting January 5-8, 2023 in Denver, Colorado. She is the eighth American Sign Language linguistics scholar to be named an LSA Fellow, and the first one from Gallaudet. The others are Dr. Diane Brentari, Dr. Karen Emmorey, Dr. Diane Lillo-Martin, Dr. Richard Meier, Dr. Donna Jo Napoli, Dr. Carol Padden, and Dr. David Perlmutter.
