The Macfadden Legacy Challenge is a matching gift challenge that enables Gallaudet alumni to make an immediate impact when they make or report a new planned gift to Gallaudet University (e.g. via bequests in a will or living trust, retirement plan beneficiary designations, etc.).

When you document a new planned gift to Gallaudet University, you can direct the matching funds to any Gallaudet fund of your choice such as a specific scholarship, a specific program, or even your class reunion fund. For every new documented planned gift, Jim, '62, and Holly, '64, Macfadden will donate $1,000 today in your honor to any Gallaudet fund of your choice!

Moreover, if the estimated value of your planned gift is worth $100,000 or more, you be recognized for your generosity by having your name and photo printed on a beautiful lamp post banner that will be displayed on campus around the Hotchkiss Field during the 2017 Homecoming weekend. The deadline is July 1, 2017 to qualify your gift for a banner.

As of April 1, 2017, we have a pool of $25,000 in unrestricted matching funds that are available on a first come, first served basis to any donor who documents a planned gift. The Macfadden Legacy Challenge will end when the matching funds have been depleted.

Q: Can I direct the Macfadden Legacy Challenge matching funds for a purpose that is different than how my bequest will be used?

A: Absolutely! That is one of the best features of the Macfadden Legacy Challenge - the matching funds can be directed to any Gallaudet fund of your choice, and they do not need to follow the same designation of your bequest. 

Q: Do I have to decide on a specific dollar amount for my gift today?

A: No. A popular choice is stating a gift as a percentage, which will automatically adjust no matter what the future may bring. However, we do ask that you provide your best estimate for what your gift would be worth.

Q: How can I provide for my family and at the same time support Gallaudet?

A: Many people put aside a percentage -- which could be 10% or 20% -- while still leaving a large majority of their assets to family and friends. Or you could choose to make a charitable gift of whatever balance remains in a retirement account, which also saves on taxes.

Q: Although I didn't graduate from Gallaudet, will mu planned gift qualify for this challenge?

A: Yes! Anyone who has ever enrolled at Gallaudet for amount of and is at least 50 years old is eligible for the Macfadden Legacy Challenge!

Q: How will I be recognized for my gift? 

A. You will receive a one year membership to the President's Circle, a lifetime membership to the Abraham Lincoln Legacy Society and be listed in the Honor Roll of Donors. Special recognition is given to donors who make planned giving commitments valued at $100,000 or more by July 1st, 2017. They will have their name and picture printed on a beautiful, durable lamp post banner. The banner will be displayed on campus during the 2017 Homecoming weekend. After being displayed, donors may keep their banner.
