Overview

The WDL Scholarship is a special opportunity for future deaf leaders from developing countries to study at Gallaudet University. The goal of the scholarship is to give students strong academic knowledge, leadership skills, and confidence so they can return home and make a positive difference in their deaf communities.

The WDL program is generously funded by The Nippon Foundation (Tokyo, Japan). Since the program began in 2003, more than 25 WDL Scholarships have been awarded. See them here.

What the scholarship covers

This is a two-year graduate scholarship that includes full tuition, room and board (housing and meals), medical insurance. Additionally, the scholarship provides an annual stipend to support essential expenses including books, supplies, laundry, personal items, and local transportation.

WDL Scholars also receive mentorship from a member of the Gallaudet University faculty member and have the opportunity to conduct an internship in their home country, allowing them to connect their academic learning with practical experience and community impact.

After Graduation

After completing their studies, WDL Scholars are required to return to their home countries. Scholars are expected to support and improve the lives of deaf people through education, advocacy, leadership, and collaboration with local and international organizations.
