The Recognition Committee was established in January 2003 to:
- Formalize University recognition for deserving individuals and groups.
- Establish guidelines on how to recognize individuals and groups.
- Review requests for naming spaces and other kinds of recognition and make recommendations to the President.

Guidelines for recognizing an individual or group:
- While serving the University in an academic capacity, the individual has demonstrated high scholarly distinction and had earned a national or international reputation.
- While serving the University in an important administrative capacity, the individual has rendered distinguished service that warrants recognition of the individual's exceptional contributions to the welfare of the University.
- The individual has contributed in truly exceptional ways to the welfare of the institution and/or the deaf community, or achieved such unique distinction as to warrant recognition.

- Class I: Facilities that are part of the outside environment of the University. They include buildings, complexes of building, roads, walkways, playing fields, parks, gardens, and plazas.
- Class II: Facilities that are part of inside space. They include library/reading rooms, laboratories, conference rooms, classrooms, galleries, recreational courts, lounges, hallways, and Hall of Fame.
- Class III: Facilities that are made up of portable items. They include collections of art and/or artifacts and equipment - all identifiable because of specific focus or purposes.
- Class IV: Tribute markers for recognition opportunities only. These include plaques, art works, medallions, or other markers usually associated with such features as trees, benches or small monuments. The display of tribute markers is to be approved by the President's Recognition Committee. The Committee shall also set guidelines with regard to the display of plaques and signs at the University, including those signifying induction in the Hall of Fame.
