National Survey of Student Engagement

Gallaudet University has participated in NSSE  in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2012. The National Survey of Student Engagement conducts an annual survey of freshmen and seniors at hundreds of colleges and universities all over the country. Since 1999, more than 1,400 undergraduate degree granting colleges and universities have used the NSSE to collect information about student participation in educational programs and campus activities.

NSSE is used to:

  • To participate in a national effort to improve undergraduate quality
  • To use a research-based, psychometrically sound tool
  • To compare performance against peer institutions
  • To examine patterns of strengths and weaknesses within Gallaudet, across time, and across different student groups
  • To guide and monitor institutional improvement
  • To incorporate student engagement results in self-studies, accreditation, and accountability

Research shows that higher student engagement in students' education leads to greater student achievement, persistence, and graduation.

The NSSE survey focuses on five benchmarks:

Level of Academic Challenge

Number of papers written

Active and Collaborative Learning

Made a class presentation

Student-Faculty Interaction

Discussed assignments  with instructor

Discussed career plans with a faculty member/advisor

Enriching Educational Experiences

Talking with students of a different race or ethnicity

Supportive Campus Environment

Quality of relationships with administrative personnel and offices
