The Substitute Resident Assistant (SubRA) is a part-time student paraprofessional position within the Office of Residence Life and Housing, a unit of Student Affairs. The Coordinator of Residence Education (CRE) and Graduate Assistant (GA) supervise the SubRAs. The SubRA is responsible for community building, administrating, and participating as a team member.
The SubRA is responsible for office functions, administrating, and participating as a team member within their residence hall. The SubRA is responsible for performing a variety of front desk, clerical, and customer service functions.
The description of duties, which follows, provides a general outline of the responsibilities of Substitute Resident Assistant. The SubRA is assigned to one of the University residence halls. Specific duties assigned vary depending on the needs of the residence hall and student population.
- Assists with getting to know the students of the assigned residence hall.
- Creates video messages for digital signage, and social media.
- Performs other related duties as may be assigned by your professional supervisor including evaluating programs and projects and representing the Office of Residence Life and Housing at off-campus and on-campus events.
- The SubRA works in the residence hall office as scheduled by the Substitute RA Program Coordinator. The hours are:
- 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Sunday
- 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday
- Maintains and enforces residence hall and university policies on a continuing basis, and prepares necessary reports and records of incidents.
- Assists in opening and closing of the residence hall in December and May.
- Follows-up on maintenance reports, updates key inventories and floor plans.
- Assists in room inspections and prepares rooms for campus visitors.
- Supports emergency evacuations.
- Responsible to maintain the security of the code box and key box and control over the master keys as well as reporting lost/non-returned keys to the CRE.
- Refers all maintenances requests to Facilities Department and safety-related requests to the Department of Public Safety.
- Maintains office supplies and equipment.
- Serves office duty hours.
- Advises and/or refers students with the limits of SubRA training and ability concerning academics, personal, and social matters.
- Maintains awareness of problems residents may be experiencing and assists as appropriate.
- Responds to personal and medical situations; assuming responsibility to campus-wide emergency situations on a continuing basis.
- Possesses a working knowledge of campus facilities, services and resources.
- Serves as a mediator when a roommate conflict arises. Works with students in resolving floor/wing related problems. Assists in crisis management.
- Other duties as assigned by the CRE and GA.
PARTICIPATING AS A TEAM MEMBER
- Participates in fall and winter Residence Life Paraprofessional Staff training sessions before each academic semester.
- Fall Training Session in August
- Winter Training Session in January
- Specific training dates will be communicated after hire
- Communicates on a regular basis with your CRE, other Office of Residence Life and Housing staff, and University officials.
- Attends bi-weekly SubRA meetings.
- Participates in on-going training and staff development sessions.
- Provides regular briefing updates of work shift in the residence halls using a functional residence hall-specific e-mail account.
- Shows knowledge of, personally abides by, and helps enforce the university’s policies and procedures.
- Aligns priorities so that the job responsibilities take precedence over personal commitments.
- May not have any commitments outside the position (i.e. internship, extra-curricular activities, athletics, and second jobs) without the express consent of the CRE.
- Will be expected to participate in Commencement as an usher.
- Maintains standards of personal and professional conduct and serves as role model for students and other residence hall staff.
Compensation will be in the form of hourly pay.
- Must be an undergraduate or graduate student registered full-time and have lived on campus for least a year.
- Must possess experience in planning, participating as a team member, and have knowledge of campus resources.
- Must be in good standing with the University.
- At time of hire and throughout employment, candidate must maintain a Cumulative and Semester Grade Point Averages (GPAs) of at least 2.3 (for undergraduate students) and 3.0 (for graduate students) each semester, including summer sessions (if you are enrolled in summer courses).
- Understands and works within the philosophy of student development held by the Office of Student Affairs at Gallaudet University.
