As a hard of hearing person, I attended mainstream programs and grew up only knowing how to fingerspell my name. However, my hearing significantly worsened during high school. During my junior year, I learned about Gallaudet University. The JumpStart program for new signers really appealed to me, so I enrolled at Gallaudet after graduating from high school. It was linguistically and culturally overwhelming for me at first, but as time went by, I was able to communicate with others without effort. My father, who is from Colombia, told me that he knew he was fluent in English when he started to dream in English. Today, I dream in ASL, and I call the Deaf community my home. I am so grateful to Gallaudet for enabling me to pick up ASL and thrive in a barrier-free environment.
