6th Street Revitalization

Since its founding on Kendall Green in 1864, Gallaudet has been isolated from the city. In the early days the campus was located just outside of the city on the north side of Boundary Street (now Florida Avenue) and today the campus is separated from its neighbors by fences, gates and wide streets with fast moving traffic. Now with this unique combination of change on campus and in the city there is an unprecedented opportunity to integrate Gallaudet University into Washington’s exciting urban fabric.

Gallaudet is one of the largest land owners in the Florida Avenue Market area and holds a controlling interest in the lands along both the east and west sides of 6th Street.  Gallaudet is in the early planning stages for the 6th Street corridor as a mixed use development anchored by the Gallaudet “Innovation Lab” a multidisciplinary research and cultural center located on the southwest corner of the campus on the corner of Florida Avenue and 6th Street.  With a revitalized neighborhood and stronger ties to the city, Gallaudet students, faculty and staff will have grater access to places to shop, dine, work, and live within a short walking distance from campus. 

Also with theses changes Gallaudet can enjoy greater visibility and presence in the city and among its peer institutions that positions Gallaudet as a civic leader and as a leader in innovative research, cultural and academic undertakings in partnership with other institutions, civic organizations and the private sector.  Through these new partnerships a never-before-imagined landscape of learning, internships and employment becomes available to our students and alumni.
