Jennifer Myers

Jennifer Myers chose Gallaudet University’s Graduate Counseling Department for very specific reasons.  She knew that Gallaudet offers a culturally enriching experience for students, is nationally accredited and affordable, and has supportive and accessible faculty.

Jennifer currently works for a community non-profit agency in central Virginia.  She works at Valley Community Services Board providing counseling and access services to Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing Clients.  She works with the state and local hospitals, as well as with police and community personnel.  When asked how Gallaudet helped to prepare her for her career Jennifer stated, “I was able to obtain my NCC prior to graduation. I used 900 hours from my internship toward my licensure. I am able to work with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population more effectively and have resources to turn to because of my relationships established at Gallaudet.”

Jennifer’s advice to future graduate students is,  “Documentation is key. If it is not written down, it did not happen.  If you want to pursue licensure after graduation, look at the state requirements where you plan to practice. Each state has its own requirements.   Also, counselors need to lobby. LCSWs have been around a lot longer than us, and we need to step it up in order to get the same level of recognition.   But more than anything, enjoy what you do and take time for yourself.”
