SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Hufnell came to the Department of Counseling in the fall of 2011 as assistant professor, having been at Gallaudet in a different capacity at the Mental Health Center as Coordinator of Clinical Services and Training for 11 years.  Prior to that, Dr. Hufnell was in private practice for almost 10 years in Virginia and Maryland.  She also worked in mental health outpatient and day treatment programs with a Community Services Board in Virginia, consulted at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind at Hampton and provided consults in general hospital and psychiatric hospitals in southeastern Virginia for age range from adolescent to geriatric.  Early career was focused on education of deaf children and of children with emotional difficulties.

 Dr. Hufnell has presented on topics at national and international conferences on accommodations for trainees in clinical training settings, multicultural issues in supervision, complications of co-morbid medical diagnoses in treatment, and assessment of deaf children.  She has a strong interest in training mental health professionals and currently supervises students for practicum and for Foundations of Helping Skills and teaches Lifespan Development in the Department of Counseling.   

 

Specializations/Interests

Clinical supervision of mental health professionals, mental health counseling and assessment of deaf adults, couples and families, incorporating mindfulness in both counseling and supervision, assessment and treatment related to attention deficit disorders, learning disabilities, personality disorders, and mood and anxiety disorders.

 

Licensure

Dr. Hufnell holds licenses to practice psychology in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
