Julie Mitchiner was hired as a faculty member in the Department of Education in 2006.  She specializes in preparing pre-service teachers in becoming Early Childhood Education Educators. Julie received her bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and her master's degree in Family-Centered Early Education from Gallaudet University. Julie received her Ph.D. from George Mason University in Education with a specialization in Early Childhood Education and a secondary concentration in Multicultural & Multilingual Education. Her doctoral study explored Deaf parents with children who have cochlear implants and their perspectives on bilingualism in American Sign Language and English.

Before becoming a faculty member at Gallaudet, Julie was a teacher/researcher at Laurent Clerc National Deaf Center with the Early Childhood Education Team for six years. Julie's experiences at Clerc Center initiated her interest in studying Reggio Emilia Approach and bilingual education in American Sign Language and English with young children and their families.
