Cynthia Neese Bailes is a professor of education and director of the PhD in Critical Studies in the Education of Deaf Learners program. She teaches courses in critical pedagogy, literacy, and children's literature. Her writing and presentations address early language acquisition and literacy learning and bilingual principles and practices. Dr. Neese Bailes has worked in the field of education since 1972. She taught in the elementary and secondary grades at the South Dakota School for the Deaf in Sioux Falls and Secondary English at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) in Washington, DC. She also served as Assistant Principal for Programs and Principal at MSSD prior to joining the Department of Education in 1994.
