Dr. John Christiansen was granted emeritus status at the May 2011 Commencement. He was a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Gallaudet since 1977 and retired in August, 2010. He taught a variety of courses over the years, has written three books and many journal articles, and has made dozens of professional presentations. One book, co-authored with Dr. Sharon Barnartt in the Sociology Department, is entitled Deaf President Now!: The 1988 Revolution at Gallaudet University, and the other, co-authored with Dr. Irene Leigh in the Psychology Department, is Cochlear Implants in Children: Ethics and Choices. His newest book is entitled, REFLECTIONS: My Life in the Deaf and Hearing Worlds.
Dr. Christiansen served as the Chairperson of the department (as well as the former Department of Sociology and Social Work) for more than a decade, and was named a Distinguished University Faculty Member in 1998.
Now enjoying retirement, Dr. Christiansen can usually be found on his bicycle.
