Internships

Sociology majors are required to complete at least one internship during their time in the program. These internship opportunities allow students to gain practical experience to help lead them on their career path and to observe the theories and concepts of their studies in the real world.

Past internships include areas such as:

• child and family services
• educational programs
• prison caseworker offices
• police departments
• law firms

Students interested in criminal justice may be especially interested to know that Gallaudet’s connections with federal offices, the D.C. Metro Police Department gives them access to fascinating and unique internship opportunities.

Since its founding in 1920, Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) has stood by its motto, "To investigate humanity for the purpose of service." The opportunity to join the AKD Honor Society is open to select juniors or seniors and gives students the chance to be a part of a strong community of professional and social networks as they near completion of their college careers. Check with an advisor to see if you meet the academic requirements.

Library of Congress

While it could be argued all literary works in the Library of Congress are opportunities to study sociological perspectives, the Microform Reading Room has a significant amount of works based on sociology in their Humanities and Social Sciences Division. An abundance of information is at your disposal such as polls or surveys of social problems in the history of the United States, in addition to the many collections associated with the history of social movements that can be found in the Manuscript Division.

Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Institution is a tremendous resource for budding sociologists. With locations and exhibits such as the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the National Museum of African American History & Culture. Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, and the Smithsonian Latino Center, students have the opportunity to learn more about the many cultures that have made American culture what it is today and apply sociological perspectives to consider the future.
