E-Reserves Instructions
Electronic reserves are required readings (journal articles and book chapters) that you link to your Blackboard course page for the convenience of your students.
The Library can
- Create links to electronic books and articles that are available in the Library catalog and databases
- Seek permission to copy and post other readings
- Pay for permission as needed
- Scan and post readings to the Blackboard Content System once all conditions are met
Readings must
- Be required for the entire class (not optional)
- Be published or accepted for publication
- Be protected by copyright held by someone other than the instructor (instructors may independently post readings for which they own the copyright)
- Conform to copyright law or have the potential for copyright compliance through royalty payments
Procedure
- Ask the Technology Help Desk to give Course Builder status to "library.reserves" so Library staff can troubleshoot any problems. No items will be posted until library.reserves has this status.
- Send your syllabus in electronic format to library.reserves@gallaudet.edu. The syllabus must include:
- Your name
- Course department, number, and section(s)
- Semester (for example, "Spring 2013")
- Complete citations
- Journal articles: author(s), article title, journal title, volume, issue, date, page numbers
- Book chapters: book author or editor, chapter author if different from book author, chapter title, book title, publisher, date, chapter page numbers
We cannot process incomplete information.
- which readings must be linked from the Library catalog or database to your course page, and which links to use

- any readings that cannot be copied and posted
Time frame
- The librarian will tell you about availability and let you know what copies are needed within one week of receiving your syllabus
- The Library will post scanned readings to the Blackboard Content System within two weeks of receiving photocopies from you
PDFs and photocopies of each item must be
- accompanied by copyright notice:

Copyright compliance requirements
- Courses must be password protected

- Copyright permissions are granted for one semester only. Readings posted to the Blackboard Content System are removed at the end of each semester. To post the same readings in a future semester, you must request them again.
- You may not keep readings after the end of a semester to post again as course reserves. Only the Library may post readings.
- Materials for which the copyright holder denies permission for a copy cannot be used and will be removed from the Blackboard Content System.
- Documents must include the copyright notice as described in item #1 of the PDFS and Photocopies section.
- Note: The Library has the final decision on copyright compliance issues.
