Gallaudet University Council
On March 24, Gallaudet President T. Alan Hurwitz announced the formation of a 22-member University Council charged with advising and counseling the president on university decision-making regarding issues of interest to the entire community, as well as with improving communication among members of the community by providing an open forum for discussion of critical University decisions.
“This is a milestone for Gallaudet University in that it will provide an opportunity for representatives of all constituencies on campus to sit together and discuss issues of common concern,” said President Hurwitz. “The final outcomes of these deliberations will help provide the confidence that these recommendations were reached in an inclusive, transparent matter with perspectives from all constituencies being presented and deliberated.”
The University Council will facilitate an open forum for debate, discussion, and consensus-building on critical policy and procedural issues that have an impact on the university. It is a deliberative and consensus building body rather than a voting body with the ultimate purpose being the enhancement of decision-making on campus.
Participants on the University Council will consist of representatives from the university administration, faculty, staff, the Clerc Center, the undergraduate student body, and the graduate student body. Each group will be responsible for selecting its respective representatives. Meetings of the University Council are expected to occur six to eight times during the school year.
